Equal opportunities and online NHS services – how can PPGs help ensure that digital options are open to all?

Wednesday 12 July 2017

Developments in technology and the public’s appetite for online services are fuelling the rapid expansion of NHS online services for finding information; booking appointments and renewing prescriptions; managing health conditions; learning how to live more healthily and supporting each other as patients and carers.

Most patients and carers are able to use the internet, and many find it a convenient and simple way to access NHS services. However, older people and residents in low income households are more likely to lack either the internet connection or the skills and confidence to take full advantage of what is available.

PPGs and Digital Brighton and Hove met to dicuss what can be done in Brighton & Hove to make online health and wellbeing services more accessible to everybody.

The Hangleton and Knoll Health Forum acts as the Patient Participation group (PPG) for 4 local surgeries

  • Links Road
  • Hove Medical Centre
  • Hangleton Manor
  • Benfield Valley Health Hub

Practice Managers from all four practices attend the Forum.

Patients from any of these surgeries are very welcome to join meetings, as are residents who live in the area and who have an interest in community health. Detailed notes are sent by email after every meeting and many patients who cannot or do not want to attend meetings keep in touch with what the Forum is doing this way.The HK Forum is as a place where the community is proactive around their own health needs, inviting a range of speakers and thinking together about local solutions to identified health issues. HK Forum is patient led and facilitated by a local charity (the Hangleton and Knoll project), giving the Forum access to a huge range of local networks.
